Our Story
Silver Wings Ballroom is a skating rink and event venue that offers fun and entertainment for folks of all ages in Brenham, Texas. It is a family run skating rink that has been in the community since December 1976.
In the late 70’s, Rudy and Alice Hafner moved their young family to Brenham. The couple was in the business development and construction business, but more than that, they were visionaries and problem solvers.
Rudy and Alice had a dream of creating a place the entire community of Brenham would enjoy. The family friendly concept would combine dancing and skating for entertainment for all ages. They would name this business concept Silver Wings Ballroom.
Rudy and Alice made the bold, and some would say crazy, decision to invest in this unproven concept. With Rudy’s construction background, and help from his son Jimbo, Silver Wings Ballroom was *literally* built from the ground up by the Hafner family.
At one of the early skating sessions, a country girl from Brenham named Betty caught the eye of Jimbo. Soon, Jimbo was spending more time wooing Betty, and working at Silver Wings, than he was in class at Texas A&M. With Silver Wings facing the early business struggles most businesses see, Jimbo decided to leave A&M and focus on building a great business.
Silver Wings proved successful and the community came to love skating loops around the smooth hard maple floor rink. Jimbo and Betty, got married, had babies and officially bought Silver Wings from Alice and Rudy in 1989.
The new business owners poured their energy and hearts into Silver Wings, which today is the longest running entertainment business in the region.
Rudy and Alice were visionaries, who made investments into the community and in people. Jimbo and Betty took that vision and multiplied it. Without them, Silver Wings, would not exist… and the millions of memories people have made throughout the years (and both the skating and dance floor) wouldn’t have happened.
Jimbo and Betty Hafner continue to run the thriving business today. At any given skating session, you will see them working to help create memories for new generations of skaters… you will likely also see several of their 11 grandkids on the skate floor, living out the vision and dream that Rudy and Alice brought to this great community.
